SEN. HACKWORTH VOTES IN SUPPORT OF NEW STATE BUDGET
The Virginia General Assembly convened at noon today for a Special Session of the Virginia General Assembly to consider the biennial state budget. A compromise was not reached during the regular session and over the past three weeks budget conferees and Governor Youngkin have been in negotiations.
“I am honored to come to Richmond today and cast my vote in favor of the biennial budget that prevents a state shutdown and moves Virginia forward. I want to thank all the budget conferees, both House and Senate, and the Governor for their hard work, long hours and bipartisan efforts to create a financial plan that is the definition of compromise.
I am especially proud to have approximately $35 million dollars that directly impacts SWVA in this budget. I am also proud of the 3% pay raises we achieved for teachers, law enforcement and state employees.
Every budget contains a few items that we don’t all agree with, but I’m thankful that this compromise removes multibillion-dollar tax increases, removes the funding for a retail marijuana marketplace, and maintains our nonparticipation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.
Overall, I am proud to be able to vote in favor of a fiscally responsible, commonsensical, balanced budget that will benefit all Virginians and am grateful that Governor Youngkin wasted no time and signed the bills today so that local governments can have certainty when drafting their budgets,” said Senator Hackworth.
Specifically for Southwest Virginia, the 2024-2026 biennium budget contains funds to study an expansion of the natural gas pipeline in Tazewell County, pre-plan the replacement of Buchanan and Tazewell Halls at Southwest Virginia Community College, provide additional telehealth and telemedicine services, build an Inland Port in the Southwest region, and provide additional OB/GYN student residency slots that will grow the pipeline of these specialty healthcare providers that are so desperately needed in our region.
