💐ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL “SPRING FLING”! 💐

Thanks to the Appalachian Agency for Senior Citizens and all of the community organizations and volunteers who put in so much effort to make this a fun and meaningful time for seniors in our area! It was a PACKED house!

@Danny Altizer gave a powerful invocation, U.S. Senator Tim Kaine updated us on the status of our armed forces, and I provided an update on the new state budget and things that happened in Richmond earlier this year.

I really enjoyed spending the morning with all of you!! Thanks for having me!

On Tuesday, Governor Youngkin signed one of the bills I passed during Session that reduces unnecessary regulations.

I joined Secretary of Labor Bryan Slater, Delegate David Owen, and Director of DPOR Kishore Thota to watch the Governor sign a bill that we worked on with the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation (DPOR).

This bill will ease regulations, ensuring tens of thousands of individuals and businesses in home renovation and painting can thrive without the burden of extra costs and requirements for licenses in Virginia.

Reducing unnecessary regulations in the Commonwealth is a goal of mine!

🚨 NATIONAL LAW ENFORCEMENT WEEK 🚨

What better way to recognize this important week than with prayer and fellowship?

I was honored to join Richlands Chief of Police Ron Holt, Tazewell County Sheriff Brian Hieatt, Town of Tazewell Chief of Police Stan Lampert, Richlands Town Manager Jason May, and many others to lift up our law enforcement community in prayer and offer a few words of encouragement.

This week is about honoring the officers who’ve fallen in the line of duty and the families they leave behind. It’s also about recognizing the sacrifices made by the officers and families who continue to protect and serve our communities.

We are blessed by their service and can’t thank them enough!

SEN. HACKWORTH VOTES IN SUPPORT OF NEW STATE BUDGET

The Virginia General Assembly convened at noon today for a Special Session of the Virginia General Assembly to consider the biennial state budget. A compromise was not reached during the regular session and over the past three weeks budget conferees and Governor Youngkin have been in negotiations.

“I am honored to come to Richmond today and cast my vote in favor of the biennial budget that prevents a state shutdown and moves Virginia forward. I want to thank all the budget conferees, both House and Senate, and the Governor for their hard work, long hours and bipartisan efforts to create a financial plan that is the definition of compromise.

I am especially proud to have approximately $35 million dollars that directly impacts SWVA in this budget. I am also proud of the 3% pay raises we achieved for teachers, law enforcement and state employees.

Every budget contains a few items that we don’t all agree with, but I’m thankful that this compromise removes multibillion-dollar tax increases, removes the funding for a retail marijuana marketplace, and maintains our nonparticipation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.

Overall, I am proud to be able to vote in favor of a fiscally responsible, commonsensical, balanced budget that will benefit all Virginians and am grateful that Governor Youngkin wasted no time and signed the bills today so that local governments can have certainty when drafting their budgets,” said Senator Hackworth.

Specifically for Southwest Virginia, the 2024-2026 biennium budget contains funds to study an expansion of the natural gas pipeline in Tazewell County, pre-plan the replacement of Buchanan and Tazewell Halls at Southwest Virginia Community College, provide additional telehealth and telemedicine services, build an Inland Port in the Southwest region, and provide additional OB/GYN student residency slots that will grow the pipeline of these specialty healthcare providers that are so desperately needed in our region.

We are grateful to all of the moms out there who give so much of themselves to make the world a kinder, happier, and more understanding place.

✂️ RIBBON CUTTING IN GILES COUNTY! ✂️

Wow…thanks to the New River Valley Regional Commission, Friends of Southwest Virginia, and Giles County for working together to make The Giles County Trail Center happen!

It’s a beautiful 3,000 square foot hub for information on lots of outdoor recreation opportunities and services in Giles County. Shuttle service is available to connect visitors to hiking trails, mountain biking systems, and paddling launch locations throughout Giles County.

Thanks to Congressman Morgan Griffith, Delegate Jason Ballard, and Chief Deputy Secretary of Commerce & Trade Juan Pablo Segura for joining me and everyone else in attendance as we officially opened this exciting new center!

CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS’ WEEK

CORRECTIONAL OFFICERS’ WEEK

This week, Virginians across the Commonwealth join the VA Department of Corrections in recognizing the men and women who promote long-lasting public safety and serve on the front lines of Virginia’s prisons.

The Department’s correctional officers help the agency ensure public safety by providing effective incarceration. Correctional officers also aid in treatment and the re-entry process, which helps to provide former inmates with a successful transition back into society.

We are ALL grateful for their tireless service!

IT’S NATIONAL FENTANYL AWARENESS DAY!

Fentanyl is an incredibly potent artificial opioid. It poses grave danger to our youth. It’s crucial to understand its strength and the risks it carries.

Fentanyl is up to 50 times stronger than heroin and 100 times stronger than morphine. Even a tiny amount can be lethal.

Fentanyl is often used as an additive to other drugs. This means that a person who thinks they are taking heroin, cocaine, or methamphetamine could actually be exposed to fentanyl. Fentanyl can also be found in counterfeit prescription drugs.

This illicit form has led to a tripling of overdose deaths among teenagers in recent years. In 2022, 1,951 Virginians lost their lives to fentanyl.

One pill CAN kill. Please educate yourself and your loved ones. And learn how to use
lifesaving treatments like Naloxone.
